LibreOffice in India - community, status, challenges
This talk is about the LibreOffice Indian community. India is a huge country and the spread of the free software movement is uneven, and so is the adoption and awareness of LibreOffice. For instance, in the southern Indian state of Kerala, LibreOffice is taught in all the government schools.
I will also share my story of going to conferences – from a local Software Freedom Day event to DebConf 2023 in India - and my experiences.
On the technical side, about a year ago, there were no LibreOffice mirrors in India. That’s when I and a few of my friends decided to run mirrors based in India for downloading LibreOffice. The mirrors I host are at https://mirrors.ravidwivedi.in/tdf.
Future plans include being more active and conduct more events, such as Document Freedom Day and presence (stalls/talks) at other local conferences.
Moreover, our community aims for organizing a LibreOffice India conference someday. With more people joining the community and myself getting experience at organizing events, LibreOffice India conference will hopefully be a reality soon.
